Do I need a referral or a mental health care plan (MHCP)?

You are not required to have a referral or a mental health care plan (MHCP) to book an appointment with a psychologist. However you will need a referral letter and/or a MCHP if you wish to claim a rebate back from Medicare.

Under Medicare’s Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative, you may be eligible to access up to 10 partially rebated individual treatment sessions per calendar year. To access this service, you will need a referral from your GP or psychiatrist. There referral paperwork from a GP is called a Mental Health Care Plan. Psychiatrists do not need have to fill out this paperwork but can write a referral letter asking that you be seen under the Medicare Better Access Scheme. The referring doctor will specify how many sessions they would like you to receive before you need to return to seem them for a review.

If I am eligible for a Medicare rebate how much will my ‘gap payment’ or ‘out-of-pocket expense'“ be?

The current Medicare rebate for a 50-minute session with a clinical psychologist is $136.35 for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. Therefore, with the rebate, your ‘out of pocket’ expense or ‘gap payment’ for a weekday appointment is $73.65.
